The green light grows brighter every day now. A new take on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s seminal novel The Great Gatsby will have its world premiere in 2024. Gatsby will debut at A.R.T. in Cambridge, Massachusetts, directed by Tony winner Rachel Chavkin and choreographed by Tony winner Sonya Tayeh.

As previously announced, Gatsby will feature a score by Florence Welch, the Grammy-nominated rock star of Florence + the Machine, and Grammy and Oscar nominee Thomas Bartlett. Writing the book is Pulitzer Prize winner Martyna Majok (Cost of Living).

The musical will be produced at American Repertory Theater by special arrangement with Amanda Ghost and Len Blavatnik for Unigram/Access Entertainment, and Jordan Roth, in association with Robert Fox. Hannah Giannoulis serves as co-producer.

More Gatsby news, including casting and additional creative team members, will be announced soon.

American Repertory Theater at Harvard University has presented several pre-Broadway tryouts, including Jagged Little Pill; Waitress; Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812; and a revival of 1776, a co-production with Roundabout Theatre Company, which is now touring nationally. It most recently staged the Olivier-winning Life of Pi, which begins previews on Broadway next month.

Up next at A.R.T. will be Sammi Cannold’s take on Evita. The beloved Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s rock musical will run May 14–July 16. It follows the equally adored and reviled Eva Perón’s meteoric rise to become first lady of Argentina before her death at 33.

The staging was last seen at New York City Center in November 2019, starring Solea Pfeiffer in the title role and Jason Gotay as Che. Casting for the A.R.T. production will be announced at a later date. Following its run at A.R.T., Evita will play at Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C. as part of its 2023-2024 season.
