25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE Returns to New York This Fall
You don’t have to “speak six languages” to get excited for this! In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is returning to the New York stage this fall. It will run for a limited 14-week engagement from Friday Nov. 7 — with official opening on Nov. 17 — to Feb. 15, 2026 at New World Stages.
The Tony Award-winning musical tells the story of six spellers who enter the Putnam County Spelling Bee, and the challenges they face along the way. Featuring a Tony Award-winning book by Rachel Sheinkin and score by Tony Award winner William Finn, the show has long been beloved for its heart, humor, and verve.
The production will be directed and choreographed by Danny Mefford and feature scenic design by Teresa L. Williams, costume design by Emily Rebholz, lighting design by David Weiner, sound design by Haley Parcher, and music supervision by Carmel Dean.
Spelling Bee was first developed at Barrington Stage Company and debuted Off-Broadway at Second Stage Theatre in 2005. It earned widespread critical acclaim, transferring immediately to Broadway’s Circle in the Square Theatre. The production won two Tony Awards and ran for nearly three years, cementing itself in the musical theatre canon.
Cast and further creative team details for the production will be announced at a later date. For tickets and more information, visit here.
