Aaron Tveit, Lea Michele, and Nicholas Christopher Will Lead First-Ever Broadway Revival of CHESS
Check, mate. Aaron Tveit, Lea Michele, and Nicholas Christopher will star in the first-ever Broadway revival of Chess — they will play Freddie Trumper, Florence Vassey and Anatoly Sergievsky, respectively. The production will open in Fall 2025.
Featuring a new book by Emmy Award winner Danny Strong, this production will be directed by Michael Mayer, who has worked with Michele on Spring Awakening and Funny Girl. It will be choreographed by Lorin Latarro, with music supervision by Brian Usifer.
With an iconic score by ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus and Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award winner Tim Rice, Chess is a musical where power and passion collide. It tells the story of a love triangle between two chess champions — one American and one Russian — and a woman torn between them. It is set against a backdrop of political intrigue and international tension during the Cold War. For all three of them, everything — personal, professional, and political — is at risk… and nobody’s rules are the same.
Tveit won the 2020 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his leading role as Christian in Moulin Rouge! He also originated the role of Gabe in the Pulitzer Prize-winning Next to Normal, and recently starred in AppleTV+’s Schmigadoon alongside the likes of Cecily Strong, Keegan Michael-Key, Alan Cumming, and Kristin Chenoweth.
Michele is best known for her iconic role as Rachel Berry in Glee, and took on her dream role of Fanny Brice in Funny Girl from 2022-2023. She also originated the role of Wendla in Spring Awakening.
Christopher has taken the stage as George Washington in Broadway’s Hamilton, Pirelli in the recent Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd, and Seymore in the current Off-Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors.
Details on dates, the location of the theatre, and ticketing, and additional casting and creative team will be released soon.
