André Holland To Star in THE BROTHERS SIZE at The Shed This Fall
We’re about to be “closer than a brother.” André Holland, who starred in the 2016 Best Picture winning film Moonlight, will take the stage in The Brothers Size at The Shed this fall.
The Brothers Size is co-directed by Academy Award winner and Geffen Playhouse Artistic Director Tarell Alvin McCrane and co-directed by Bijan Sheibani. McGrane also wrote the play, which is a modern-day fable set in the Deep South. Previews begin August 30, and the show will run through September 28.
The play tells the story of two brothers, Ogun (who will be played by Holland) and Oshoosi. Ogun, the elder brother, embodies hard work and reliability, whereas formerly-incarcerated Oshoosi is seemingly carefree and unpredictable. When the charismatic Elegba arrives, Oshoosi is tempted back to his old habits and the brothers’ relationship is put to the test. The play explores themes of loyalty, freedom, duty, and the bonds of brotherhood.
Alani iLongwe, known for Paradise Blue and Arthur the King, will play Oshoosi and Malcom Mays, known for Power Book III: Raising Kanan will play Elegba.
This co-production with Los Angeles’s Geffen Playhouse marks the 20th anniversary of the play. It will be presented in the round at The Griffin Theater.
“McCraney’s profound exploration of brotherhood, identity, and the complexities of the Black experience remains a vital and moving story, and we believe this production will offer our audiences a powerful and unforgettable theatrical experience,” Madani Younis, chief executive producer at The Shed said in a statement. “It’s a privilege to present such a vital piece of American theater and to continue our commitment to showcasing groundbreaking artists and narratives in our spaces at The Shed.”
