Congratulations, old friend! Jonathan Groff has won the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for his outstanding performance as Franklin Shepard in Merrily We Roll Along. Groff was crowned at the 2024 Tony Awards on the stage of the Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater. Groff beat out fellow nominees Dorian Harewood for The Notebook, Brian d'Arcy James for Days of Wine and Roses, Eddie Redmayne for Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, and Brody Grant for The Outsiders.

This is Groff’s third nomination and first win, with his first nomination being for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for Spring Awakening in 2007 and his second nomination being for Hamilton in 2016. While Groff is well known in the theater community for many roles throughout the years, he is also renowned for his remarkable performances in film and television, with notable roles in works like Frozen and Mind Hunters.

Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s Merrily We Roll Along charts the turbulent relationship between composer Franklin Shepard and his two lifelong friends.
