Kara Young Wins 2nd Tony Award In A Row for PURPOSE
Kara Young has won the 2025 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her performance in Purpose. Young beat out fellow nominees Tala Ashe for English, Jessica Hecht for Eureka Day, Marjan Neshat for English, and Fina Strazza for John Proctor is the Villain.
Young is the first Black performer to have been nominated in this category for four consecutive years for her performances in Clyde’s, Cost of Living, Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Around the Cotton Patch, and now Purpose. She has been nominated in all four of her roles on Broadway, and is now taking home this award in back-to-back years. She has also performed Off-Broadway in Table 17, Twelfth Night, The New Englanders, and more. Soon, she will co-star in Aleshea Harris’ film Is God Is for Orion Pictures.
Purpose, which is nominated for the 2025 Tony Award for Best Play, won the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It tells the story of the influential Jasper family, and the cracks in it that surface when the son returns home with an uninvited friend. The family is forced to reckon with its faith and legacy in this intimate and gripping drama.
