“Sing for me, my meadowlark!” Ariana DeBose will star in The Baker’s Wife at Classic Stage Company’s Lynn F. Angelson Theater this Fall. It will run from Oct. 23 to Dec. 14, with official opening set for Nov. 11.

The Baker’s Wife, which features a book by Tony Award winner Joseph Stein and music & lyrics by Tony Award winner Stephen Schwartz, has never received a full-scale production in New York City. It is based on the film La Femme du Boulanger by Marcel Pagnol and Jean Giono, and directed by Gordon Greenberg.

A complete performance schedule, additional casting, and full creative team will be announced at a later date.

Ariana DeBose won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, making her the first openly queer Afro-Latina to win an Academy Award. She was nominated for a Tony Award as Disco Donna in Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, and was part of the original Broadway cast of Hamilton. She hosted the 2022, 2023, and 2024 Tony Awards, and starred in Schmigadoon and Ryan Murphy’s The Prom on Netflix.

"Ariana is one of our finest young singing actresses, and I'm excited by the depth and nuance she will bring to the title role,” composer Schwartz said in a statement. “Plus, I've had the pleasure of hearing her sing ‘Meadowlark,’ so I know CSC audiences are in for a treat.”

The Baker’s Wife is set in a quiet French village, where a baker and his wife bring fresh bread, and fresh gossip. Their town gets caught up in a swirl of romance, mischief, and melody when temptation begins to stir.
