Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' PURPOSE Is Headed To Broadway This Spring
It seems BJJ is headed back to Broadway! Today it was announced that Tony Award-winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’s new play, Purpose, is coming to Broadway this season. Directed by Two-time Tony Award-winner Phylicia Rashad in her directing debut, the production will begin previews at the Helen Hayes Theater on Tuesday February 25, 2025, with an official opening night set for mid-March.
For decades, the influential Jasper family has been a pillar of Black American Politics: civil rights leaders, pastors and congressmen. But like all families, there are cracks and secrets just under the surface. When the youngest son Nazareth returns home to Illinois with an uninvited friend in tow, the family is forced into a reckoning with itself, its faith and the legacies of Black radicalism. Spirited, hilarious and filled with intrigue, Purpose is an epic family drama from one of the country’s most celebrated voices.
Purpose comes to Broadway straight from Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company, where it premiered last spring. While the play will be performed at the Helen Hayes Theater, this is not a Second Stage production.
Casting will be announced in the coming months.
