David Alan Grier has won Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play at the 74th Annual Tony Awards for his performance as Sergeant Vernon C. Waters in A Soldier’s Play. This is his fourth Tony nomination and first win. He was previously nominated for his performances in The First (1982), Race (2010), and The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess (2012).

Grier beat out fellow nominees James Cusati-Moyer (Slave Play), Ato Blankson-Wood (Slave Play), John Benjamin Hickey (The Inheritance), and Paul Hilton (The Inheritance).

Grier is best known for his television appearances on In Living Color, Life with Bonnie, The Carmichael Show, and A Series of Unfortunate Events

Previous Broadway credits include: The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess (Sporting Life), Race (Henry Brown), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (Prologus/Pseudolus), Dreamgirls (James Thunder Early), and The First (Jackie Robinson).
