Make a wish and blow them out! The Broadway premiere of Noah Haidle’s Birthday Candles opened April 10 at the American Airlines Theatre and Theatrely was on the scene to capture it all.

The play stars Emmy winner Debra Messing as Ernestine Ashworth, who spends her 17th birthday agonizing over her insignificance in the universe. Soon enough, it’s her 18th birthday, then her 41st, 70th, and 101st. The cast also features Enrico Colantoni, John Earl Jelks, Crystal Finn, Susannah Flood, and Christopher Livingston.

Vivienne Benesch directs the production, which features sets by Christine Jones, costumes by Toni-Leslie James, lighting by Jen Schriever, sound by John Gromada, and original music by Kate Hopgood.
