Dreamcasting BARBIE for Broadway

Hi Barbie! In case you’ve been living under a rock, last summer Greta Gerwig’s Barbie made history as the highest-grossing live-action comedy film of all time, Gerwig’s highest-grossing film, and the first film by a female to cross the $1 billion mark worldwide at the box office. So needless to say, it’s a great movie. There’s so many incredible elements to Barbie, from Gerwig’s direction and co-writing with Noah Baumbach, to the over-the-top costumes from Jacqueline Durran and visuals, led by cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto.
But perhaps the most impressive piece of the Barbie puzzle is its cast. Featuring stars like Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, and Will Ferrell, and introducing many viewers to new favorites like Ariana Greenblatt, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa, and many, many more.
If you’re anything like me, one of your first thoughts after seeing Barbie was, “Wow, that was incredible. I want more of this.” And as a self-identified theatre girlie, my brain immediately went to the imaginary Barbie: The Musical, and my second thought was, “Okay, now I need to dream cast this immediately.” I will say, casting this fake musical was so difficult, and I went back and forth between so many people for each of these roles (it’s almost like there’s an insane amount of very talented people on Broadway!), so each of these is subject to scrutiny, and I welcome your thoughts on these choices, and who you’d cast instead of my choices!
