Drew & Dane Productions to Develop MR. HOLLAND'S OPUS Musical Adaptation
BD Wong Wayne Barker’s musical adaptation of the 1995 film Mr. Holland’s Opus is now being developed with Drew & Dane Productions.
Drew & Dane Productions is currently producing Broadway's Just In Time and Gypsy, as well as the acclaimed Off-Broadway revival of Little Shop of Horrors at the Westside Theatre.
“Our Mr. Holland’s Opus is a musical comedy in which arts education and mentorship are front and center,” book and lyric writer Wong and music writer Barker said in a statement. “We feel lucky to be working with Drew & Dane to revive one of the most moving movies ever, about a teacher and the many students he creatively inspires, at the precise moment we’re hungering for these themes.”
The pair’s musical adaptation first premiered at Ogunquit Playhouse in Maine. It tells the story of composer Glenn Holland, who reluctantly takes a job as a high school music teacher. Through the four decades he holds the position, audiences witness many students, changes in musical taste, and dwindling arts education budgets unfold. Richard Dreyfuss was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in the 1995 film.
