The show is based on Jodi Picoult and Samantha van Leer’s novel of the same name. It follows Delilah, an outsider in a new town and a new school, as she seeks comfort in the pages of her favorite book, where she feels heard and understood by the handsome Prince Oliver. As fantasy and reality begin to blur, Delilah embarks upon a self-empowerment journey for the ages.

Between the Lines played its final performance September 11, 2021, at Second Stage’s Tony Kiser Theatre after opening in July. It starred Arielle Jacobs as Delilah opposite Jake David Smith as Prince Oliver/Edgar, alongside Vicki Lewis as Ms. Winx/Jessamyn Jacobs/Mrs. Brown/Kyrie, Hillary Fisher as Allie/Princess Seraphima, Will Burton as Frump/Ryan, Jerusha Cavazos as Janice/Marina, John Rapson as Dr. Ducharme/Rapskulio, Wren Rivera as Jules/Ondine, Sean Stack as Martin/Troll/Dad/Delivery Person, and Murney as Grace/Queen Maureen. They were joined by understudies Heather Ayers, Dan Hoy, Martin Landry, and Aubrey Matalon.

Directed by two-time Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun (Newsies) and choreographed by Paul McGill, the musical features music and lyrics by Elyssa Samsel and Kate Anderson and a book by Timothy Allen McDonald.

The musical premiered at Kansas City Rep in Fall 2017. In January 2018, a sold-out concert version was presented at the 92Y in Manhattan, with plans for an Off-Broadway premiere in 2020 initially postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Next week, January 19, the cast of Between the Lines will perform in a concert at 54 Below. For tickets and more information, click here.
