Why [not] love? Michael Arden has won the 2025 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for his work on Maybe Happy Ending. Arden beat out fellow nominees Saheem Ali for Buena Vista Social Club, David Cromer for Dead Outlaw, Christopher Gatelli for Death Becomes Her, and Jamie Lloyd for Sunset Boulevard.

Arden won the 2023 Tony Award for Best Direction for his work on the Broadway revival of Jason Robert Brown’s Parade starring Ben Platt and Michaela Diamond. This year, he will serve as the director for The Queen of Versailles starring Kristin Chenoweth, which is transferring to Broadway after a successful run at Boston’s Emerson Colonial Theatre. His other credits include directing the 2017 revival of Once on This Island, the 2015 revival of Spring Awakening, and the 2022 Broadway production of A Christmas Carol.

Maybe Happy Ending follows two not-quite-human robots — played by Darren Criss and Helen J. Shen — as they forge an incredibly human bond. Set in a near-future Seoul, the show explores the concepts of love, friendship, companionship, and the human experience.
