New Nell Benjamin and Laurence O'Keffe Musical To Premier In San Diego
“Omigod you guys!” Nell Benjamin and Laurence O’Keefe — composers of Legally Blonde — are premiering a new musical Huzzah! at The Old Globe in San Diego. The musical is produced by special arrangement with No Guarantees Productions, and will have a limited six-week engagement from Sept. 13 to Oct. 19. The cast will include Legally Blonde legend Kate Shindle.
The show tells the story of two sisters, one a princess and one who works in insurance. The pair need to stop their fighting and work together to save their father’s Renaissance Faire from financial ruin. They play their odds, risking the payroll to hire the greatest swordsman on the whole Ren Faire circuit.
Huzzah! will be directed by Annie Tippe. It will feature a cast of 21 performers, including Shindle, Josh Breckenridge, Anthony Chatmon II, Peyton Crim, Matt DaSilva, Cailen Fu, Allison Guinn, Liisi LaFontaine, Mike Millan, Kevin Pariseau, Leo Roberts, and Lance Arthur Smith. The ensemble will include Michael Cusimano, Beth Stafford Laird, Michelle Lauto, Tatiana Lofton, and Aaron Michael Rae. Swings include Berto Fernández, Max Antonio Gonzalez, Sophia LaRosh, and Katheryne Penny.
In addition to their work together on Legally Blonde, Benjamin and O’Keefe have extensive repertoires. Benjamin has also worked on Mean Girls, with O’Keefe’s work including Heathers the Musical and Bat Boy. The married pair have become widely beloved for their musical stylings, and have been nominated for multiple Tony Awards.
The creative team for Huzzah! will also include choreography by Katie Spelman, orchestrations by Ben Green, music direction by Alejandro Senior; music supervision by Mary-Mitchell Campbell, scenic design by Todd Rosenthal, costume design by Haydee Zelideth, lighting design by Jeff Croiter, sound design by Connor Wang, wig design by Earon Chew Nealy, fight direction by Jacob Grigolia-Rosenbaum, and voice and dialect by Emmelyn Thayer.
