SHUCKED's Alex Newell Wins Tony for Best Featured Actor in a Musical
Now Lulu “Independently Owns” a Tony Award! Alex Newell has won the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for his hilarious performance as Lulu in Shucked. They were crowned at the 2023 Tony Awards on the stage of the United Palace. Newell beat out fellow nominees Kevin Cahoon also for Shucked, Justin Cooley for Kimberly Akimbo, Kevin Del Aguila for Some Like It Hot, and Jordan Donica for Lerner & Loewe’s Camelot.
Newell made their Broadway debut in the Tony Award-winning revival of Once on This Island as Asaka, as well as earning a Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theater Album for their performance. She’s also appeared onscreen many times, including on Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Our Kind of People, Glee, and Empire. They also put out their EP Power in 2016, which hit number four on the US Dance/Electronic chart.
Shucked is the new musical comedy featuring a book by Tony Award winner Robert Horn, a score by the Grammy Award-winning songwriting team of Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, and directed by Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien, this corn-fed, corn-bred American musical is sure to satisfy your appetite for great musical theater.
