THE OUTSIDERS's Danya Taymor Wins Tony Award For Best Direction Of A Musical
Taymor for the Tony! Danya Taymor has won the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for Broadway’s The Outsiders. Taymor was crowned onstage at the 2024 Tony Awards at Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater. Taymor beat out fellow nominees Danya Taymor for The Outsiders, Maria Friedman for Merrily We Roll Along, Michael Greif for Hell's Kitchen, and Leigh Silverman for Suffs.
This is Danya Taymor's first Tony Award nomination and win! She made her directorial debut on Broadway in 2015 with Thérèse Raquin and directed one of the first shows back on Broadway after the reopening in 2021 with the play Pass Over.
In Tulsa, Oklahoma, 1967, the hardened hearts and aching souls of Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade and their chosen family of ‘outsiders’ are in a fight for survival and a quest for purpose in a world that may never accept them. A story of the bonds that brothers share and the hopes we all hold on to, this gripping new musical reinvigorates the timeless tale of ‘haves and have nots’, of protecting what’s yours and fighting for what could be.
