A lot of ingredients, both literal and metaphorical, are going into the Broadway premiere of Noah Haidle’s Birthday Candles. Prior to the play’s debut, starting March 18 at the American Airlines Theatre ahead of an April 10 opening, the cast and crew got together to discuss the work.

Debra Messing, who stars Ernestine, says audiences can expect to watch her character’s life unfold as she grows and learns from experience. On top of that, she’ll bake a cake in real-time every night. Tony nominee John Earl Jelks, playing Matt/William, says Birthday Candles has “a cup of humanity, a stick of patience… a lot of life, and a whole bowl of love.”

The cast also features Enrico Colantoni as Kenneth, with Crystal Finn as Joan/Alex/Beth, Susannah Flood as Alice/Madeline/Ernie, and Christopher Livingston as Billy/John. Vivienne Benesch directs.
