Ainsley Melham Will Play Title Role in ALADDIN Starting Late August
Mr. Aladdin, sir! Ainsley Melham will return to Broadway’s Aladdin in the title role from Aug. 26 to Nov. 30. Melham originated the role in the Australian production in 2016 and joined the Broadway company for several months in 2019, marking his Broadway debut. He will take over from Adi Roy, who will play his final performance on Aug. 24.
Melham has most recently been seen on Broadway as the original Dwayne in BOOP! The Musical. In Australia, he has performed as Fiyero in Wicked, the title role in Pippin, Prince Topher in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, and Charley Kringas in Merrily We Roll Along.
Aladdin opened on Broadway in 2014. It has since opened 11 productions on four continents, welcoming over 21 million people worldwide.
Based on the film of the same name, Aladdin features music by Tony Award and eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken, lyrics by two-time Oscar winner Howard Ashman, three-time Tony Award and three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice and Chad Beguelin. Its book is by Beguelin. The production is directed and choreographed by two-time Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw.
The animated film Aladdin was released by Disney in 1992 and was a critical and box office smash, becoming the highest-grossing film of the year. It won the Oscar for Best Original Score and introduced the hit song “A Whole New World,” which won the second of the film’s two Academy Awards as Best Original Song.
