The hills of tomorrow are looking bright! Tony winner Lindsay Mendez and Tony nominee Jonathan Groff will join Daniel Radcliffe in the new Off-Broadway revival of Merrily We Roll Along at New York Theatre Workshop. Fun fact: Theatrely predicted Mendez would make a great Mary, while Groff as Franklin was so obvious that we overlooked it.

Nonetheless, with the previously announced Radcliffe as Charley, the Stephen Sondheim and George Furth musical begins previews November 21 at NYTW. An opening night is set for December 12 with the limited engagement currently scheduled to run through January 8, 2023.

Merrily We Roll Along spans three decades in the entertainment business, charting the turbulent relationship between composer Franklin Shepard and his two lifelong friends: writer Mary and lyricist-playwright Charley. It is based on the original play of the same name by George S. Kaufman & Moss Hart. A full cast will be announced at a later date.

Directed by Olivier-winning performer Maria Friedman and choreographed by Tim Jackson, the New York Theatre Workshop production is presented by special arrangement with Sonia Friedman Productions, the Menier Chocolate Factory, and Patrick Catullo. Friedman previously directed the musical in London, which won the Olivier for Best Musical Revival. It transferred stateside in 2017 for a run at Huntington Theatre Company in Boston.

The Off-Broadway creative team will include Catherine Jayes as music supervisor and Alvin Hough, Jr. as music director, with scenic and costume design by Soutra Gilmour, lighting design by Amith Chandrashaker, and sound design by Kai Harada. Casting is by Jim Carnahan and Jason Thinger with additional casting by Taylor Williams. Dave Anzuelo will serve as fight and intimacy director with Jhanaë K-C Bonnick as stage manager.

To provide more accessibility for theatregoers, NYTW will offer all tickets for the first two performances plus a limited number of tickets to all other performances for $25 via a digital lottery. More information about discounted tickets will be unveiled closer to the start of previews.

Regular tickets, starting at $145, will go on sale September 21 at Noon ET here. NYTW memberships offer priority access to tickets and are on sale now at NYTW.org or by calling 212-460-5475.

The NYTW 2022-2023 season will begin September 9 with american (tele)visions by Victor I. Cazares, directed by Rubén Polendo. Following Merrily We Roll Along will be (in no particularly order) Anton Chekhov’s Three Sisters, in a new adaptation by Pulitzer Prize finalist Clare Barron, directed by Sam Gold; How to Defend Yourself by Liliana Padilla, co-directed by Padilla, Rachel Chavkin, and Steph Paul; and The Half-God of Rainfall by Inua Ellams.
