LEOPOLDSTADT Wins Tony Award for Best Play
50 years in just over two hours is apparently what it takes to win a Tony! Leopoldstadt has won the 2023 Tony Award for Best Play! The humane and heartbreaking Tom Stoppard play beat out fellow nominees Ain’t No Mo’, Between Riverside and Crazy, Cost of Living, and Fat Ham.
Set in Vienna, Leopoldstadt takes its title from the Jewish quarter. This passionate drama of love and endurance begins in the last days of 1899 and follows one extended family deep into the heart of the 20th century. Full of his customary wit and beauty, Stoppard’s late work spans fifty years of time over two hours.
Leopoldstadt earned a total of six Tony Award nominations, including Brandon Uranowitz for Best Featured Actor, Patrick Marber for Best Direction, Richard Hudson for Best Scenic Design, Brigitte Reiffenstuel for Best Costume Design, and Neil Austin for Best Lighting Design.
Leopoldstadt is playing until July 2 at the Longacre Theatre, and features Jesse Aaronson as Aaron/Leo, Betsy Aidem as Grandma Aidem, Jenna Augen as Wilma/Rosa, Japhet Balaban as Otto, Daniel Cantor as Kurt, Mohel, Faye Castelow as Gretl, Eden Epstein as Hermine, Gina Ferrall as Poldi, and Brandon Uranowitz as Ludwig/Nathan.
