Liberation is coming to Broadway this fall. The original play, which won a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble during its premier at Roundabout Theatre Company earlier this year, will begin performances at the James Earl Jones Theatre on Oct. 8. It will play a strictly limited 14-week engagement.

Tickets go on sale on Aug. 11 via Telecharge.

Liberation is written by Bess Wohl and directed by Whitney White. It takes place in the basement of an Ohio Y in the 1970s, where a group of women meet for their weekly consciousness-raising group. They find a new wave of feminism taking hold around them. While their candid conversations unfold with humor, heart, and vulnerability, the play explores how everyday moments spark lasting change.

“Bringing Liberation to Broadway is, quite literally, a dream come true for me,” playwright Bess Wohl said in a statement. “This play has lived in my heart for a very long time, and I’m beyond thrilled to continue its journey with this fantastic team at this moment. I can’t wait to share it with Broadway audiences.”

The cast and creative team for the play will be announced soon.

Wohl has previously written Grand Horizons, which earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Play. Her other works include Camp Siegfried, Make Believe, Continuity, Small Mouth Sounds, American Hero, Barcelona, Touched, In, and Cats Talk Back. She also recently made her feature film debut with Baby Rudy, which was released by Magnolia Pictures in early 2023.

White recently directed Jaja’s African Hair Braiding on Broadway, and has worked on The Secret Life of Bees at The Almeida, Walden at Second Stage, Jordans at the PUblic Theatre, and On Sugarland, which earned her a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Direction.

Liberation begins its 14-week engagement at the James Earl Jones Theatre on West 48th Street in New York City on Oct. 8. For tickets and more information, visit here.
