Lin-Manuel Miranda To Direct Film Adaptation of OCTET
He’s found his next (movie) shot! Lin-Manuel Miranda will direct the musical film adaptation of Dave Malloy’s Octet as his next feature film.
Octet premiered Off-Broadway in 2019, and explores the concept of internet addiction through the story of an eight-person internet addiction support group that meets in a church basement. They talk about their compulsions and digital dependencies, and sing of how we can truly be present with one another.
“I haven’t stopped thinking about Octet since I saw Annie Tippe’s premiere production in November of 2019,” Miranda said in a statement. “Dave Malloy’s score is versatile, brilliant and grows more relevant with each passing year. It won’t leave me alone so here we are.”
The film will be produced by Julie Oh — who also joins 5000 Broadway Productions as the new Head of Film & TV. — Luis A. Miranda, Jr. (President of 5000 Broadway Productions), and John Skidmore for Best Kept Secret Productions.
Casting details are forthcoming.
Oh produced Miranda’s directorial debut tick… tick… BOOM! which was nominated for Academy Awards and named one of the Top 10 Films of 2021 by the American Film Institute.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to lead film and TV for 5000 Broadway Productions and work with Luis Miranda and the team to build a cinematic home where singular projects like Octet can thrive,” Oh said in a statement.
