The cast is set for the New York premiere of Fat Ham at The Public Theater. The Public and National Black Theatre co-production will star Marcel Spears as Juicy, Nikki Crawford as Tedra, Chris Herbie Holland as Tio, Billy Eugene Jones as Rev/Papp, Adrianna Mitchell as Opal, Calvin Leon Smith as Larry, and Benja Kay Thomas as Rabby.

Performances are set to begin in The Public’s Anspacher Theater May 12 ahead of a May 26 opening night.

The play by James Ijames reinvents Shakespeare’s Hamlet, now centered a new character named Juicy, a queer, Southern college kid. Already grappling with their identity, the ghost of Juicy's father shows up, demanding his murder be avenged.

Directed by The Public’s Associate Artistic Director Saheem Ali, the production will feature scenic design by Maruti Evans, costume design by Dominique Fawn Hill, lighting design by Stacey Derosier, sound design by Mikaal Sulaiman, hair and wig design by Earon Chew Nealey, props by Claire M. Kavanah, illusions by Skylar Fox, fight direction by Lisa Kopitsky, and choreography by Darrell Moultrie. Jereme Kyle will serve as the production stage manager and Ryan Kane will serve as the stage manager.
