Hallelujah! Kara Young has won the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play for her incredible portrayal of Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jenkins in Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch. She was crowned the winner at the 2024 Tony Awards on the stage of Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater. Young beat out fellow nominees Quincy Tyler Bernstine for Doubt: A Parable, Juliana Canfield for Stereophonic, Celia Keenan-Bolger for Mother Play, and Sarah Pidgeon for Stereophonic.

This is Young’s third nomination and her first win. Young made her Broadway debut in Clyde's in 2021, earning a Best Featured Actress nomination. Last year, she was nominated for Cost of Living. Remarkably, every time she has graced the Broadway stage, she has received a Tony nomination. How wonderful!

Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch opened in September 2023 and closed in February of 2024 and was the first revival of Ossie Davis’ American comedy. Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch, telling the story of a Black preacher’s machinations to reclaim his inheritance and win back his church.
