Sam Pinkleton Wins 2025 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play for OH, MARY!
This is one for the history books! Sam Pinkleton has won the 2025 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play. Pinkleton beat out fellow nominees Knud Adams for English, Sam Mendes for The Hills of California, Danya Taymor for John Proctor is the Villain, and Kip Williams for The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Pinkleton recently choreographed Stephen Sondheim’s final musical Here We Are at the Shed. He also choreographed Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812, for which he received a Tony nomination. This marks his first Tony nomination and win for Best Direction.
Oh, Mary! is a dark comedy about a miserable, suffocated Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Unrequited yearning, alcoholism, and suppressed desires abound in this 80-minute one-act play that finally examines the forgotten life and dreams of Mrs. Lincoln, through the lens of an idiot (playwright Cole Escola). The production opened last summer at the Lyceum Theatre after rave reviews downtown.
