This year’s Academy Awards were filled with Broadway talent in attendance and winning up a storm! Here I break down my favorite Broadway alum’s red carpet looks from the 2024 Oscars.

“Song of Purple Summer?” More like dress of purple summer! If you didn't know, Matlin was in the Deaf West revival of Spring Awakening playing the Adult Women (a personal favorite show) and maybe she’s paying homage to that incredible song. Here she’s sparkling in a custom Rodarte sparkly purple full length gown. The color really made her stand out on the red carpet and complemented her coloring perfectly.

Rita Moreno

At 92 years old, EGOT winner and all-around icon Rita Moreno has been to many an Oscars ceremony and worn many looks, with this Badgley Mischka gown highlighting her fabulosity. The ruffles on this all-black gown and gloves look gave texture to the ensemble.

Cynthia Erivo

Did somebody say Elphaba-coded? Cynthia Erivo understood the assignment in this dark green Louis Vuitton over-the-top gown. The Tony Award winner’s look was almost as stunning as her performance at the 2016 Tony Awards.

Danielle Brooks

Speaking of The Color Purple, Danielle Brooks (who played Sofia both on Broadway and in the 2023 film) made a dramatic statement in her black gown from Dolce & Gabbana. Not only did she look gorgeous, but I think she really stepped out of her typical red carpet fashion box with the corset top and high slit skirt.

Julianne Hough

I can’t be the only one who thought POTUS alum Julianne Hough’s Alexandre Vauthier’s jumpsuit was actually a gown! The pants had so much volume that they created the optical illusion of a gown. I love the simplicity of the whole look, but the complexity of the metallic top with the white pants.

Ariana Grande

Did the leading ladies of the upcoming Wicked film call each other to coordinate for the 2024 Oscars? Because both really leaned into their characters’ essences, with Grande wearing a voluminous Glinda-pink custom-made Giambattista Valli gown with Tiffany & Co. jewelry. Just add the bubble and she’s ready to sing “No One Mourns the Wicked!”

Jessica Lange

Yet another EGOT winner, Jessica Lange, looked ravishing in a long sleeved black Dolce & Gabbana gown. Returning to Broadway in Mother Play next month, Lange took this opportunity to glam it up, and I’ll never complain about that.

Da'Vine Joy Randolph

2024 Oscar winner and Tony Award nominee Da’Vine Joy Randolph literally took my breath away when I saw her in this powder blue Louis Vuitton number. The drama, the sequins, the sleeves, everything came together in perfect harmony to make Randolph stand out like the star she obviously is (just ask the Academy). I’ve been obsessed with so many of her looks this awards season, but this one was the pièce de résistance.

Emma Stone

Another 2024 Oscar winner and Broadway alum, Emma Stone stunned in a mint green Louis Vuitton gown. The Poor Things star kept things simple for the Oscars, which really let her beauty shine alongside the immaculately created peplum gown and necklace, which featured a 30.47 carat Sri Lankan sapphire.
