Two of Broadway’s upcoming leading men will kick off the 2023 NYC theatre awards season. Justin Guarini, who will play Prince Charming in Once Upon a One More Time, and Tony winner Roger Bart, set to reprise his performance as Doc Brown in Back to the Future, will reveal the nominees for the 2023 Drama League Awards. The announcement will take place April 25 at 11 AM at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.

As previously announced, the 89th Annual Drama League Awards will be presented May 19 at The Ziegfeld Ballroom. Hadestown Tony winner André De Shields will receive the Distinguished Achievement in Musical Theater Award. Other honorees include The Drama Book Shop (Contribution to the Theater Award), Lear deBessonet (Founders Award for Excellence in Directing), and Darin Oduyoye (Gratitude Award).

Drama League Awards will be bestowed in the following categories: Distinguished Performance Award, Outstanding Production of a Play, Outstanding Production of a Musical, Outstanding Revival of a Play, Outstanding Revival of a Musical, Outstanding Direction of a Play, and Outstanding Direction of a Musical. Broadway and Off-Broadway productions will need to have been in previews between April 21, 2022–April 23, 2023, to be eligible for this season’s awards.

First presented in 1922 and formalized in 1935, The Drama League Awards are a core service to the theater community of The Drama League, an arts organization that has provided vital support to the field and its artists for over a century. The organization’s mission provides the nation’s only full-time, lifelong creative home for stage directors and audiences that enjoy their work around the world.

The 2022 edition saw wins for A Strange Loop, Sutton Foster for The Music Man, and more. It also saw the introduction of new awards for directing. More information about this year’s ceremony and how to attend can be found at DramaLeague.org.
