Pop Star JoJo Will Join MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL on Broadway
A beloved pop star is heading from the recording studio to Broadway. Singer-actress JoJo will play Satine in Moulin Rouge! The Musical, stepping into the role April 11. She'll be joined by returning Moulin Rouge! alum Derek Klena as Christian. Ashley Loren and Tony winner Aaron Tveit will remain in the production through April 9.
With her smash debut hit “Leave (Get Out)”, the singer has been on the scene for over two decades. Other singles include “Too Little Too Late” and “Say So.” In 2020, she released her fourth studio album, Good to Know, and the holiday album December Baby. The next year, she released an EP, Trying Not to Think About It, and followed it up with a worldwide tour in 2022. On screen, she’s recently appeared in the CW’s All-American. She was the runner-up in Season 5 of The Masked Singer as Black Swan.
Inspired by the 2001 Baz Luhrmann film, Moulin Rouge! won 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The show is directed by Alex Timbers, with a book by John Logan, choreography by Sonya Tayeh, and music supervision, orchestrations, and arrangements by Justin Levine. The musical opened at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in the summer of 2019 and reopened in September 2021 following the shutdown of Broadway due to the pandemic.
As in the film, the stage adaptation celebrates more than 100 years of music, using tunes from Offenbach to the Rolling Stones to Madonna. It features many of the songs from the movie and more recent hits, including from Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Rihanna.
In addition to Tveit and Loren, the current Broadway cast is led by Eric Anderson as Harold Zidler, André Ward as Toulouse-Lautrec, David Harris as The Duke of Monroth, Caleb Marshall-Villarreal as Santiago, and Jessica Lee Goldyn as Nini. Oyoyo Joi is the Satine Alternate.
The ensemble also includes Jacqueline B. The design team for Moulin Rouge!
