Welcome to Schmicago, everybody! A new trailer released today offers a sneak peek at the incredible musical world fans will discover when Season 2 of Schmigadoon! premieres April 5 on Apple TV+. Check it out below.

Rather than celebrating the Golden Age of Musicals, the new season pays homage to the edgy, jazzy shows of the ‘60s and ‘70s. From the trailer alone, there are homages to Chicago, Cabaret, Sweeney Todd, Company, Hair, A Chorus Line, Sweet Charity, and Oliver!.

The new story will follow the reconciled Melissa and Josh, played again by Cecily Strong and  Keegan-Michael Key, as they’re thrown into the seedy underbelly of Schmicago, with the former joining a local cabaret and the latter framed for murder. Cue the “Dun dun dunnnnn!”

A slew of Season 1 favorites are back for more, taking on new characters. From the looks of things, Oscar winner Ariana DeBose is playing an Emcee-type cabaret leader, Jane Krakowski is a Billy Flynn-esque lawyer, and Kristin Chenoweth appears to be a cross between Mrs. Lovett, Miss Hannigan, and Widow Corney. There’s even Tituss Burgess as a narrator like the Leading Player from Pippin!

Also returning are Martin Short, Dove Cameron, Jaime Camil, Alan Cumming, Ann Harada, and Aaron Tveit. Burgess and Patrick Page have joined the cast for season two, the latter playing (what else?) a dastardly villain.

Co-creator Cinco Paul again serves as showrunner for Season 2. He wrote all of the original songs for the series, having won an Emmy Award last year for his song “Corn Puddin’” in Season 1.

Apple TV+ will drop the first two episodes of Schmigadoon! when it premieres April 5, followed by new episodes every Wednesday. Season 1 is available to watch now.
