The best and brightest of Off-Broadway productions from the 2022-2023 season were on hand to celebrate the 2023 OBIE Awards last night. Held at Terminal 5 in Manhattan, the ceremony featured a red carpet prior to an evening of speeches and honors.

Among the night’s big winners, announced earlier in the week, were Sanaz Toossi for English (Best New American Play) and Martyna Majok for Sanctuary City (Playwrighting). Winning for their outstanding performances were On Sugarland duo Stephanie Berry and Lizan Mitchell, Brittany Bradford for Wedding Band, Kara Young for Twelfth Night, and Arturo Luís Soria for Ni Mi Madre. Billy Eugene Jones (On Sugarland, Fat Ham) and Andrea Patterson (Cullud WattahConfederates, Seize the King) were awarded in the Sustained Performance category.

Special citations were handed out this year to the entire cast and creative teams of Fat Ham, headed to Broadway this spring, and English; Heather Christian, Ben Moss, Nick Kourtides, and the musical team of Oratorio For Living Things; Aya Ogawa for The Nosebleed; costume designer Qween Jean (Corsicana, soft., and several others); Laurie Woolery and Shaina Taub for their collaboration in the adaptation of As You Like It; Alex Edelman for Just For Us; and Richard Nelson for the completion and producing of The Rhinebeck Panorama. Also of note was Circle Jerk being recognized as a Digital+Virtual+Hybrid Production, along with Russian Troll Farm, and Taxilandia.

Elsewhere, Taylor Reynolds (Tambo & Bones); Awoye Timpo (Wedding Band); and Matt Ray (The Hang) received an award for direction, while Saheem Ali (Fat Ham, Nollywood Dreams) and David Brimmer (Wolf Play) were given a citation for Sustained Achievement in Directing.
