It’s a miracle! The National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene will present Harmony, a new musical from Barry Manilow and his longtime collaborator Bruce Sussman this March. Directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Warren Carlyle, Harmoney will star Sierra Boggess and Chip Zien. Previews begins March 23, 2022 with an opening night set for April 13, 2022. 

A new musical stage adaptation of Black Orpheus is in the works, featuring a book by Pulitzer Prize winner Nilo Cruz, music by Grammy winner Sergio Mendes and direction and choreography by Tony Winner Sergio Trujullo. Currently, a developmental workshop and out-of-town regional theatre run are planned for this year before a bow on Broadway in 2023. Originally based on the play Orfeu de Conceição by the great Moraes, Black Orpheus resets the classic Greek love story of Eurydice and Orfeu against the backdrop of a Rio de Janeiro favela during Carnival. Equal parts celebratory, erotic, haunting and tragic, Black Orpheus became an instant classic of popular culture, winning the Cannes Palme d'Or and the 1959 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and introduced the world to Bossa Nova.

Billy Bustamante will direct and choreography Notes From Now, a brand-new musical anthology at 59E59 Theaters this March. Bringing together songwriters from Broadway and Beyond, this limited engagement is will run from March 2, 2022 through March 20, 2022. Notes From Now weaves together words and music to create a gallery of playful, provocative, and profound observations on the human journey. The line-up features newly-commissioned original songs created by 21 of today’s brightest musical theater writers: Jay Adana; Troy Anthony; Masi Asare; Jeff Blumenkrantz; Georgie Castilla and Jaime Lozano; Gretchen Cryer; Tia DeShazor and Derrick Byars; Alexandra Elle and Stephen Schwartz; Adam Gwon; Douglas Lyons and Ethan Pakchar; Peter Mills; Ryan Scott Oliver; Michelle J. Rodriguez; Angela Sclafani; Paulo K Tiról; and Amanda Yesnowitz and Deborah Abramson. 

The international best-selling novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is headed to the Great White Way this summer in a new theatrical adaptation by Matthew Spangler. The new play will begin performances on July 6, 2022 at Broadway's Hayes Theater. An opening night is currently set for July 21, 2022 and it will run through October 30. Giles Croft is set to direct.

Michael R. Jackson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning musical A Strange Loop will open on Broadway next spring after acclaimed productions at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company and Playwrights Horizons. Directed by Stephen Brackett, the new musical is choreographed by Raja Feather Helly. This blisteringly funny new work exposes the heart and soul of a young artist grappling with desires, identity, and instincts he both loves and loathes. Hell-bent on breaking free of his own self-perception, Usher wrestles with the thoughts in his head, brought to life on stage by a hilarious, straight-shooting ensemble. Bold and heartfelt in its truth-telling, A Strange Loop is the big, Black, and queer-ass Great American Musical for all.

It seems Broadway will have to wait a little bit longer for Paradise Square. The new musical which just finished its out-of-town tryout in Chicago will delay performances as a precaution due to the spike in COVID cases from the Omicron variant. Paradise Square will now being previews on March 15, 2022 with an opening night planed for April 3, 2022 at the Barrymore Theatre. 

Last night, producer Kevin McCollum announced that his new musical comedy Mrs. Doubtfire will be taking a hiatus from performances at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre for nine weeks from January 10 - March 14, 2022 citing concern for potential long-term employment. The show is scheduled to resume on March 15, 2022 with tickets on sale through November. This unprecedented decision is the first of what is likely going to be a very unpredictable few months as the theatre industry battles with this Omicron surge.

Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of the Temptations will play its final Broadway performance on Sunday, January 16, 2022. With a book by Dominique Morisseau, the production was directed by Des McAnuff and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo. At time of closing, Ain’t Too Proud will have played 488 performances and 21 previews. 

Earlier tonight, it was announced that Keenan Scott II’s Thoughts of a Colored Man will not reopen following their recent suspension of performances due to the Covid resurgence. The show played its final performance on December 22. It was originally scheduled to play until March 13, 2022. Directed by Steven H. Broadnax III, the ensemble cast featured Dyllón Burnside, Bryan Terrell Clark, Da’Vinchi, Luke James, Forrest McClendon, Tristan Mack Wilds and Esau Pritchett.

Broadway is about to get a lot less sweet. It was announced this evening that Waitress, the acclaimed Sara Bareilles musical based on the 2007 film of the same name, will not reopen following their recent suspension of performances due to the Covid resurgences. The show played its final performance on December 20. It was originally scheduled play until January 9, 2022. 

It was announced earlier this evening that Jagged Little Pill, the rock musical inspired by Grammy winner Alanis Morissette’s iconic album will not reopen on Broadway following their recent suspension of performances. The Tony and Grammy winning musical played its final performance on Friday, December 17, 2021. Directed by Diane Paulus, the show featured a Tony winning book by Diablo Cody. The musical opened at the Broadhurst Theatre on December 5, 2019 after a run at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, MA. The show ran 171 performances and 36 previews.

Tony winner Brian Stokes Mitchell and his talk show Crossovers Live! have joined with Third Act to launch a new line of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) that are available now through December 20, 2021. With this release, Mitchell became the first Broadway actor to digitize his likeness in the form of an NFT. This collaboration was commissioned by production company Atomic Focus Entertainment, which partnered with Third Act’s in-house NFT studio to produce the collection. ​​The Third Act platform boasts an incredibly simple and easy-to-use crypto experience. The Little Prince, one of the best-selling and most translated books ever published, is headed to Broadway in a new stage production filled with theatrical spectacle, dance, aerial acrobatics, and ground-breaking video mapping technology following sold-out runs in Paris, Sydney, and Dubai. The Little Prince will begin performances Friday, March 4, 2022 at the Broadway Theatre with opening night set for Thursday, March 17, 2022.

Some of Broadway’s best are set for The Muse Sessions, a unique concert series about inspiration and the creative process, and the role of the muse in art. The performance is set to take place Monday, February 14, 2022 at 8pm. The Muse Sessions features Damon Daunno, Tony Award-winner Shuler Hensley, Christiani Pitts and Drama Desk Award-winner Rachel York singing the unforgettable songs of Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Norah Jones, Elvis Costello, Natalie Cole, Stephen Sondheim, Todd Rundgren, Paul McCartney, Rufus Wainwright, and two selections from the Broadway-bound musical Little Dancer, with music and lyrics by Tony Award-winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty.

The first Broadway revival of Ntozake Shange’s for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf will return to the Booth Theatre ​this spring, the same theatre it ran 742 performances in back in 1976. This reimagined production will be directed and choreographed by Tony Award nominee Camille A. Brown, making her the first Black woman to serve as both positions on a Broadway show in more than 65 years. The celebration of power of Black womanhood will begin previews on Friday, March 4, 2022 with an opening night set for Thursday, March 24, 2022. 

Earlier today, producers of Douglas Lyons’ Chicken & Biscuits announced it will play its final performance at the Circle in the Square Theatre on Sunday, November 28, 2021. The limited engagement was set to run through January 2, 2022. The production is temporarily suspended due to COVID-19 cases within the company, and will resume performances on Friday, November 19, 2021. 

Get ready to Sell! Sell! Sell! The beloved film Trading Places will have its world-premiere musical at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta next spring directed by Tony Award winner Kenny Leon. Based off the 1983 film from Paramount Pictures, Trading Places is a contemporary reimagining of the prince and pauper fable. Billie Rae Valentine, a savvy hustler down on her luck, and Louis Winthorpe III, a minted commodities-trading firm director, have their lives deliberately switched by the devious Duke brothers to settle a petty bet in an outrageous debate of nature versus nurture. Trading Places is helmed by an exciting creative team including television and film writers Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant, musical writing team Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner, acclaimed film, television, and music video choreographer Fatima Robinson, associate director Tinashe Kajese-Bolden.

Earlier this morning, it was announced that Broadway’s Ciara Renée will take over the role of Jenna in Waitress from Jennifer Nettles beginning November 29, 2021. The current production is playing a limited engagement through January 9, 2022.

On November 15, 2021 for one night only, the stars from the original Broadway cast of Spring Awakening will reunite at the Imperial Theatre for a special concert event benefiting The Actors Fund. Original cast members including Skylar Astin, Gerard Canonico, Lilli Cooper, Jennifer Damiano, Christine Eastbrook, John Gallagher, Jr., Gideon Glick, Jonathan Groff, Robert Hager, Brian Johnson, Lea Michele, Lauren Pritchard, Krysta Rodriguez, Stephen Spinella, Phoebe Strole, Jonny B. Wright, and Remy Zaken are all set to reunite. Directed by the original director, Michael Mayer, the concert will take place at 7pm. 

It’s time to pick-a-little, talk-a-little all about the casting for the highly anticipated revival of Meredith Wilson’s The Music Man starring Hugh Jackman as Professor Harold Hill and Sutton Foster as Marian Paroo. The classic musical will begin performances at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre on December 20, 2021 ahead of an official opening night on February 10, 2022.

James Bond himself Daniel Craig will be returning to the Great White Way opposite Ruth Negga who makes her Broadway debut in a new production of Macbeth directed by Sam Gold. Arriving at the Lyceum Theatre on March 29, 2022 before an official opening on April 28, 2022, the production will feature scenic design by Christine Jones, costume design by Suttirat Larlarb, lighting design by Jane Cox, sound design by Mikaal Sulaiman, original music by Gaelynn Lea, special effects design by Jeremy Chernick, and fight direction by David Leong.
