Neil Simon’s classic comedy Plaza Suite is headed back to the Great White Way for its first-ever revival when previews begin February 25, 2022 at the Hudson Theatre. Starring Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker, the revival will be directed by John Benjamin Hickey. An official opening night is set for March 28, 2022. The cast will include Danny Bolero as The Waiter, Molly Ranson as Jean McCormick/Mimsey Hubley, and Eric Wiegand as The Bellhop/Borden Eisler. The cast is completed by Tony Michael McGrath and Erin Dilly, who will standby for Broderick and Parker, respectively; in addition to understudies Laurie Veldheer and Cesar J. Rosado.

A new musical stage adaptation of Black Orpheus is in the works, featuring a book by Pulitzer Prize winner Nilo Cruz, music by Grammy winner Sergio Mendes and direction and choreography by Tony Winner Sergio Trujullo. Currently, a developmental workshop and out-of-town regional theatre run are planned for this year before a bow on Broadway in 2023. Originally based on the play Orfeu de Conceição by the great Moraes, Black Orpheus resets the classic Greek love story of Eurydice and Orfeu against the backdrop of a Rio de Janeiro favela during Carnival. Equal parts celebratory, erotic, haunting and tragic, Black Orpheus became an instant classic of popular culture, winning the Cannes Palme d'Or and the 1959 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and introduced the world to Bossa Nova.

The new musical which just finished its out-of-town tryout in Chicago will delay performances as a precaution due to the spike in COVID cases from the Omicron variant. Last night, producer Kevin McCollum announced that his new musical comedy Mrs. Doubtfire will be taking a hiatus from performances at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre for nine weeks from January 10 - March 14, 2022 citing concern for potential long-term employment. The show is scheduled to resume on March 15, 2022 with tickets on sale through November. This unprecedented decision is the first of what is likely going to be a very unpredictable few months as the theatre industry battles with this Omicron surge.

It was announced this evening that Waitress, the acclaimed Sara Bareilles musical based on the 2007 film of the same name, will not reopen following their recent suspension of performances due to the Covid resurgences. It was announced earlier this evening that Jagged Little Pill, the rock musical inspired by Grammy winner Alanis Morissette’s iconic album will not reopen on Broadway following their recent suspension of performances. The Tony and Grammy winning musical played its final performance on Friday, December 17, 2021. Directed by Diane Paulus, the show featured a Tony winning book by Diablo Cody. The musical opened at the Broadhurst Theatre on December 5, 2019 after a run at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, MA. The show ran 171 performances and 36 previews.

Tony winner Brian Stokes Mitchell and his talk show Crossovers Live! have joined with Third Act to launch a new line of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) that are available now through December 20, 2021. The first Broadway revival of Ntozake Shange’s for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf will return to the Booth Theatre ​this spring, the same theatre it ran 742 performances in back in 1976.
