River Lipe-Smith will make thier Off-Broadway debut starring as the titular Caroline in MCC Theatre’s world premier of Caroline by Preston Max Allen. The play, directed by Tony Award-winner David Cromer, will also feature Amy Landecker and Chloë Grace Moretz. It begins performances on Sept. 12, with opening night on Sept. 30, through Oct. 19.

They will join the company alongside Jinkx Monsoon as Mary Todd Lincoln. Conrad Ricamora, James Scully, and Bianca Leigh, who originated their roles Off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortel and on Broadway at the Lyceum Theatre, along with the current ‘Mary Todd Lincoln,’ Tituss Burgess, will play their final performances on Aug. 2.

A slew of Broadway stars are set to perform songs created by female and nonbinary musicians at Maestra Music’s Amplify 2022 concert later this month. The lineup features Jessica Vosk, Mikaela Bennett, Bonnie Milligan, Michael Maliakel, Darius de Haas, Grace McLean, Elizabeth Stanley, Heidi Blickenstaff, Bryonha Marie Parham, Lourds Lane, and Kennedy Caughell. The performers will sing tunes created by Micki Grant, Alanis Morissette, Jeanine Tesori, Shaina Taub, and more. Directed and hosted by Kate Baldwin, the concert will also feature stories and conversations about theatre and the performing arts industry. Music director Julianne B. Merrill and associate music director Emily Erickson will lead a band made up entirely of Maestra members.

The musical begins previews April 30 at Atlantic Theater Company’s Linda Gross Theater ahead of a May 23 opening night. Rounding out the star-studded cast in the Off-Broadway production are Rick Crom, Charlotte Elizabeth Curtis, Zoe Glick, Darren Goldstein, Charlotte MacLeod, Ellyn Marie Marsh, Margot Weintraub, and Emily Zimmerman. The Bedwetter features a book by Joshua Harmon and Sarah Silverman, lyrics by Silvermand and the late Adam Schlesinger, music by Schlesinger, choreography by Byron Easley, and direction by Anne Kauffman. Neil Simon’s classic comedy Plaza Suite is headed back to the Great White Way for its first-ever revival when previews begin February 25, 2022 at the Hudson Theatre. Starring Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker, the revival will be directed by John Benjamin Hickey. An official opening night is set for March 28, 2022. A new musical stage adaptation of Black Orpheus is in the works, featuring a book by Pulitzer Prize winner Nilo Cruz, music by Grammy winner Sergio Mendes and direction and choreography by Tony Winner Sergio Trujullo. Currently, a developmental workshop and out-of-town regional theatre run are planned for this year before a bow on Broadway in 2023. Originally based on the play Orfeu de Conceição by the great Moraes, Black Orpheus resets the classic Greek love story of Eurydice and Orfeu against the backdrop of a Rio de Janeiro favela during Carnival. Equal parts celebratory, erotic, haunting and tragic, Black Orpheus became an instant classic of popular culture, winning the Cannes Palme d'Or and the 1959 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and introduced the world to Bossa Nova.

Last night, producer Kevin McCollum announced that his new musical comedy Mrs. Doubtfire will be taking a hiatus from performances at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre for nine weeks from January 10 - March 14, 2022 citing concern for potential long-term employment. The show is scheduled to resume on March 15, 2022 with tickets on sale through November. This unprecedented decision is the first of what is likely going to be a very unpredictable few months as the theatre industry battles with this Omicron surge.

Earlier tonight, it was announced that Keenan Scott II’s Thoughts of a Colored Man will not reopen following their recent suspension of performances due to the Covid resurgence. The show played its final performance on December 22. It was originally scheduled to play until March 13, 2022. Directed by Steven H. Broadnax III, the ensemble cast featured Dyllón Burnside, Bryan Terrell Clark, Da’Vinchi, Luke James, Forrest McClendon, Tristan Mack Wilds and Esau Pritchett.
